Barry's blog

Photos added through August 3

As promised, we have added photos to the posts through August 3. I have also figured out how to post a batch of photos so will be uploading all photos, viewable by day, soon.

Tip: Click on the small images

For those who do not already know this: If you click on any of the small “thumbnail” images in any posting, a larger (640 pixel wide) version of the image will appear. We also have 6 megapixel versions of all these images, of course, but they take too long to upload. :-)

We’ve taken over 3,000 images so far. We’ll post most/all of them here eventually, organized so that you can look at them by day and possibly by other criteria.

New site feature: "What's New" block

Hi all. When you log in to this site, you will now see a section in the left sidebar called “What’s New”. It will list all posts that you haven’t read at all or that has a new comment.

A Note from the Site Management

Two items:

First, we do not seem to be getting a whole lot of comments or feedback about our posts! C’mon, folks, it takes a lot of time and effort to keep you informed of what we’re doing. Get involved! Ask some questions! Tell us what you want to hear about. Make us feel appreciated. :-)

Second, because Heather is such a write-a-holic and picture-taking-a-holic, we had a bunch to post today and do not have time to add the pictures for 7/30 through 8/03 just yet. We’ll add them later along with details about our continuing adventures (e.g. in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National

7/28/06 - Background: Chip Stands

On our previous big trip in 2001 we rafted on the Ottawa River with a company named Esprit (we also kayaked it later on the same trip). As we were on the bus leaving base camp, the guides told us about the small shacks we saw lining the road: “chip stands,” they called them, “the second largest industry in this town after rafting.” A chip stand is a small hut on the road that sells some combination of fries (chips), burgers, ice cream, and a variety of other similar foods.

New site feature: Waypoints Map

I added a new feature to the site today: the Waypoints Map. Click on the link in the top menu bar (between Home and Menu). It will show you a Google map of the locations associated with each blog post. Click on a map marker to see that post. More instructions are included on the map page itself.

7/29/06: Live from I-35

Driving on I-35We’re back in the states, currently on I-35 south heading toward Minneapolis. I’m using Bluetooth to my cell phone as a modem while Heather drives down the highway. Pretty cool. [You are such a geek. —Heather]

7/25/06: Heading to Canada

I woke up at about 6:30 AM this morning to thunder and lots of waves coming off the lake. Normally we wouldn’t care about rain but today we are breaking camp and heading out, and we do not really want to pack a wet tent. So, we jumped out of bed and managed to break camp in about 20 minutes. Since it is a driving day, we then went for showers (our first in, well… never mind). It didn’t rain for an hour until we were ready to leave the camp ground but when it did we were glad we had gotten up so early.

7/24/06 - Background on Watertown and the Black River

The previous posts haven’t really explained why it is we come here. Watertown is on I-81 a mere 31 miles south of Canada. It seems to be an old industrial town now supported by the nearby Fort Drum military base. Anyway, it also happens to have the Black River running through it.
