7/25/06: Heading to Canada

I woke up at about 6:30 AM this morning to thunder and lots of waves coming off the lake. Normally we wouldn’t care about rain but today we are breaking camp and heading out, and we do not really want to pack a wet tent. So, we jumped out of bed and managed to break camp in about 20 minutes. Since it is a driving day, we then went for showers (our first in, well… never mind). It didn’t rain for an hour until we were ready to leave the camp ground but when it did we were glad we had gotten up so early.

We finally had the idea to visit a hotel lobby… A/C, electricity, and free wireless! (I’ve been using my Sprint phone as a modem. EV-DO is pretty zippy but here in Watertown we only get 1xRTT which stinks.)

Today we are heading for a quick stop at Niagara Falls and then up into Canada around the Great Lakes towards Minnesota where Heather’s aunt and uncle live. We plan to arrive there approximately around July 29. We may not have Internet access until then, so (for the moms reading this) if we do not post don’t assume we’re dead. :-) (Heather says I should have said “parents” not “moms” but somehow thinking we’re dead seems to be a “mom” thing.)

there's nothing quite like

there’s nothing quite like speedpacking, transporting and re-pitching a rainsoaked, leafy, muddy tent. It is emblematic of the true camping experience. If you don’t smell the whiff of biohazards brewing in the gear loft you havn’t been out there long enough. BTW- envy the trip you’re taking…
